Living and working in Hawaii has influenced everything from materials to subject matter in my work. The beaches are littered with plastics that have washed up from all over the world. It’s a constant reminder of the greater, global connectedness that we all share. The plastic pollution problem is black and white. There’s too much. The broken buoy on the cover is filled with beach trash collected during regular walks. The brokenness reflects the state of our planet. Its buoyancy, however, represents that there’s still hope. The materials are humble, the subject important, and the message simple.
