This beautiful, realistic, vintage work of art is handcrafted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), where copper is abundant.

When purchasing the art, I choose the ones that speak to me and particularly those that show African beauty, families and busy men, as this is how the artists and I, see the environment rather than choosing the most negative aspects of Africa that is often seen.

Large sheets of copper are flattened so that the artist has a base to draw the image on; the copper images are then hammered until the art is clear and complete.The sheets of copper have scratches and/or indentations which the artist works around and it becomes a part of the art.

Each artist shows an aspect of daily life in the Congo that is important to the artist. There are many fine artists in the Congo, and you can find all levels of talent and I searched until an artist's work moved me and showed the fine detail that you see in the art shown here.
